  1. Nice colors in that shot. BTW … DNT was the 2nd largest single stem redwood last year after Illuvatar. We found several new titans last spring and summer than changed things a lot. Can’t wait for 2015 to arrive and more exploring. Cheers, MDV of Oregon

  2. PS … RE the Canon 6D … that is a camera I am considering getting this year. Have a 5D Mk II and want an extra full frame. I heard plenty of good about the 6D though, and am going to sit on it and think for months.

RE the largest trunk, the link in my user name will lead to the largest known trunk. No guides in northern California know where its at or what park its in.

The DNT you visited is a beauty though. Apparently it photographs best in light mist or rain. But that is easier said sometimes.

    Cheers,

    MDV

    • Thanks for the tip MDV!

In terms of the largest trunk: I did visit the Lost Monarch; where does that rank?

I love my Canon 6D. I did a lot a research between the 6D and 5D mark III, but went with the 6D because side by side the image quality is virtually the same for landscape photography, and the 6D may be better in low light. The 5D is probably better at moving/action shots.

I reside in BC, so the drive down there isn’t a short one, but I do intend to return sometime to visit the area again; especially the Grove of Titans! Incredible!!! You are very lucky to be exploring such an amazing place!

      Cheers,

      David

  3. Lost Monarch’s rank varies. Dr. Robert Van Pelt, for example, does not include the separate sprout from the ground in the volume, stating in his book Forest Giants of the Pacific Coast, that those are separate treesl. In which case Lost Monarch would be like 4th largest.

I think all the Giant Sequoia are ranked by main trunk volume only.

I was born in Vancouver, B.C., but spent 98% of my years living in the USA, mostly Oregon. My drive is 5 hours. I know the extra from even just Vancouver would change things. That’s why I don’t go to Avenue of the Giants near as often as Jedediah Smith. The extra couple hours makes a difference, going from 5 to 7. So going from 5 to 11 or 12 would really be different. Then I’d probably just go once or twice per year instead of every 5 or 6 weeks.

    Best,

    Mario
